I’ll start with saying that I present Pirates 3 the award for best triple sequel so far this movie season. It would seem that many critics disagree…
It is true that there are an abundance of characters, each with their own agenda and nuanced plan of attack. Sometimes these agendas cross, sometimes they’re at odds, and sometimes the viewer can’t really be expected to keep up to know which is which.
While this feature of the script seems to have annoyed a fair number of critics, I found it both engaging and mind-boggling. While I couldn’t keep up with everyone’s agenda, I felt confident that the story was keeping up with it for me and that if I thought hard enough (or perhaps watched the movie again), all would be clear.
The special effects were better than Spider-Man’s and I chuckled more than I did when watching Shrek. The long running time of 2 hours and 46 minutes went by like a blur, and the ending caught me a little bit by surprise. They left everything just right with the possibility of a sequel, but not the necessity.
Although Depp’s Sparrow has easily taken the prize for best character in the previous installments, I was particularly fond of Rush’s Barbossa this time around. He’s so wrapped up in his character that you’d be willing to believe that Geoffrey Rush spends his free time sailing the seas of the Caribbean.
All in all, Pirates 3 is a great time that finishes off the story so confusingly started by Pirates 2. There is some confusion to be had, and it’s unclear at times who the protagonists are, but that’s the beauty of it. Afterall, you are watching a bunch of Pirates.

Check out Richard Roeper’s review.
Him and I seem to be on the same page, though I’ll never know how Yahoo! Movies randomly assigns their letter ratings based on the reading. I would have rated Roeper’s review at least B+. /shrug
